Connect payments
Connect Stripe so your forms can take gifts, add PayPal and Venmo, and see which payment methods donors get.
Until a payment processor is connected, your forms can't take money. Settings > Payments is where that happens, on the Overview tab.
Before you start: have your organization's bank details and registration to hand. Stripe asks for them, not Givable.
Connect Stripe
Stripe handles card, wallet and bank payments, and pays out to your bank. Two ways in:
Choose Connect existing account. You're sent to Stripe to sign in and pick which of your accounts to connect, then returned to Givable.
Nothing to look up beforehand: Stripe shows you the accounts you already manage.
Choose Create new account. Givable creates a Stripe account for you, then sends you to Stripe's own secure form to verify your organization and bank details. Allow about five minutes.
You can optionally set the country and the email Stripe should use, and both default sensibly from your organization details.
Either way, your bank details and identity documents go to Stripe, not to Givable.
After connecting
The Stripe card shows the account, and three things worth checking:
| Means | |
|---|---|
| Charges | Whether you can take money yet |
| Payouts | Whether Stripe can send it to your bank |
| Verification | Whether Stripe still needs documents from you |
If Stripe needs more information, Givable lists exactly what it's asking for. Charges and payouts switch on once Stripe has verified it, so don't schedule your campaign launch for the same afternoon.
Stripe dashboard opens your account at Stripe for anything Givable doesn't cover.
Your currency comes from Stripe
Your base currency is whatever your Stripe account is paid out in, and Givable keeps it in step rather than letting you set it separately.
It matters more than it sounds: every total, KPI and report in Givable is shown in that currency, and gifts in other currencies are translated into it for reporting.
Add PayPal and Venmo
On the same tab, sign in with your PayPal Business account to offer PayPal and Venmo on your forms. You choose the account at PayPal and come straight back, and Givable never sees your PayPal password.
Afterwards Givable tells you plainly:
- Whether the account is ready to accept gifts.
- Whether Venmo is enabled. PayPal grants that separately, and everything else works without it.
- Whether recurring gifts can be saved. Some accounts can only take one-time gifts, and Givable says so rather than letting the setup fail later.
What donors can pay with
The Payment methods tab shows what your donors can use: cards, wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay, bank debit such as ACH, PADs and SEPA, and PayPal or Venmo.
This tab reflects your provider's settings rather than setting them. To turn a method on, switch it on at Stripe. If a method shows as unavailable, Givable explains why, for example that a wallet needs cards enabled first, because a wallet is a card behind a button.
Which of the available methods a particular form offers is chosen on that form.
Disconnecting
Disconnect stops donations processing immediately and permanently deletes the stored connection. You can reconnect later. Don't do it while a campaign is live.
